‘Literally nowhere else they can go’: Homeless camp shutdown leaves people with few options (floridatoday.com 12/8/21)

A group of homeless people was arrested Friday afternoon for violating probation after their camp, where they were required by their probation officers to stay, was shut down and there was nowhere else for them to go.

Of the 13 people who had been living at the camp, at least seven had GPS monitors or ankle bracelets registered to the site — in the woods at 4820 Highway 192 near Melbourne — that required them to return there during the evening or risk being in violation of their probation.

The owner of the property wanted the site bulldozed, the camp members said, and they were warned Tuesday by the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office that they had to vacate the area by 8 a.m. the next morning.

That put them in a quandary: if they stayed, they’d face trespass charges and violation of probation because the camp was being closed down. If they left, they also could face violation of probation because that’s where they were required to report.

This is terrorism. Forcing people to live in a squalid camp, then forcing them out and arresting them for not living in the squalid camp is a deliberate act of brutal persecution. How is this different to events in 1935 Poland.

Forcing people to live in the woods or on the streets makes communities safe, so why didn’t probation find other places registrants to live? Trespassing them for being where they lived, but not finding them alternatives is damn criminal. Shame on Floduh and another nail in it’s embarrassment coffin!!

Probation should be helping, not looking to bust their “cliental”. Being on registry bars them from certain housing or camps.

This is a bad look for Law Enforcement. It’s like telling someone who just lost their house due to a tornado that they have to pay their mortgage on the spot or lose the house.

There isn’t rehabilitation going on with probation, but rather an eye towards retribution. Sad.

How is this possible? Is there not one agency in Florida that is able to see the reality of the situation and find a workable solution?

Or are all the power-that-be in cahoots and conspiring to create a situation in which compliance is illegal, including the courts?
